Pirates of Gramvousa
At the far northwestern tip of Crete, on the islet of Imeri
Gramvousa, stand the ruins of a once majestic fortress built by
the Venetians to protect the port. The construction, designed and
supervised by Latino Orsini, was completed in 1584, whereas in
1692 it was treacherously conceded to the Turks, who turned it
into a mosque, and later served as a pirate stronghold to Greek
revolutionists in 1824. According to the legend, a vast treasure
is hidden in the premises. Στο βορειοδυτικότερο άκρο της Κρήτης,
στο νησάκι της Ήμερης Γραμβούσας, στέκουν τα ερείπια του κάποτε
μεγαλοπρεπούς φρουρίου που έχτισαν οι Ενετοί για την προστασία
του λιμανιού. Η κατασκευή ολοκληρώθηκε το 1584 σε σχέδιο και
επίβλεψη του Latino Orsini, ενώ το 1692 παραχωρήθηκε –κατόπιν
προδοσίας– στους Τούρκους, οι οποίοι το χρησιμοποίησαν ως
τζαμί, για να μετατραπεί σε πειρατικό ορμητήριο από τους Έλληνες
επαναστάτες το 1824. Σύμφωνα με το θρύλο, ένας μεγάλος
θησαυρός είναι κρυμμένος εδώ.
