OLIVE & OIL
MUSEUM

The 18th-century olive mill, the
only surviving building of pre-
industrial age in Chania, is located
just a few steps away from
Vatolakkos Square and operates
as a museum, reviving olive oil
production as it used to be in the
distant past. The machinery of the
olive oil factory, consisting of the
millstones that were pulled by an
animal, the press, and the so-called
“worker” (an enormous wooden
axis around which the wire that
moved the press was wrapped)
have been totally restored. The
museum houses an interesting
folklore collection as well. Μόλις

της προβιομηχανικής εποχής
στα Χανιά, πλέον λειτουργεί
ως μουσείο, αναβιώνοντας την
παραγωγή του λαδιού στο μακρινό
παρελθόν. Ο μηχανισμός του, με
τον ζωοκίνητο ελαιόμυλο, την
πρέσα και τον «εργάτη», έχει
αναστηλωθεί πλήρως, ενώ στο
ελαιοτριβείο φιλοξενείται επίσης
μια ενδιαφέρουσα λαογραφική

MUSEUM OF
CONTEMPORARY ART
OF CRETE
With a permanent collection counting
approximately 680 works of art, the museum’s
latest acquisitions include works of sculpture,
painting, photography, video art and installations,
both by contemporary Greek and foreign artists.
The initial collection was created through a
donation from the family of the local artist L.
Kanakakis. Today, the exhibitions cover a wide
range of the trends of modern visual arts from
1950 to date. Με μια μόνιμη συλλογή περίπου

δωρεά των συγγενών του καλλιτέχνη Λευτέρη
Κανακάκι, το μουσείο παρουσιάζει έργα Faidra Barba. CCA Permanent Collection
γλυπτικής, ζωγραφικής, φωτογραφίας, video
art και installations σύγχρονων Ελλήνων και
ξένων καλλιτεχνών, καλύπτοντας
ένα ευρύ φάσμα της σύγχρονης
εικαστικής πραγματικότητας από
