Urban legend | Drosoulites phenomenon

The phenomenon is rumored to
be visible on the anniversary of
the Battle of Frangokastello.

An army of warriors with shiny
armors marches towards the sea over
Frangokastello. The sun has barely risen
and the first dewdrops wrap around the
historical Venetian fortress in their mist,
turning it into a haunting landscape. Only
eight minutes later, they silently disappear
just as suddenly as they appeared. These
are the famed Drosoulites. Legend says
that these are the souls of the unburied
warriors from Sfakia who fell in the
battlefield as heroes, led by Hadjimichalis
Dalianis, in the uneven battle against the
Ottomans, led by Mustafa Nayli Pasha,
on May 17th 1828, wandering over the
battlefield of their tragic loss.
Battling between legend and science, the
ghosts of the roughly 300 heroic warriors
remain a controversial subject. Some say
that this rare phenomenon is owed to the
morning dew, while others speak of light
refraction and reflections from images of
the northern coast of Africa. Regardless
of the explanation, those who have
experienced the “shadows” of May advise
visitors to stand in the plains instead of the
slopes, in order to meet them.
